Kellyville Makeover

Elise Harper of Sydney business More Than Curtains, who had been engaged to devise a window covering solution, describes the property, a brand new build, as an expansive contemporary style home.

The overall brief for the project was to disguise the look of the builder-supplied roller blinds over the home’s living/dining room stacker doors. “The blinds were basic and not installed particularly neatly, and had brackets visible from the front door. The clients also wanted to add something decorative, without being too intrusive on the home’s décor.”

“More Than Curtains were called on by Interior Designer, Lyn Hughes of Designing Inside Out. I was given some suggestions by the referring designer, but in turn, she deferred to my expertise in this situation.” In terms of selecting the right window treatment for the property, Harper says a number of considerations had to be weighed up.

“My biggest concern was that the current roller blinds were face fitted, meaning any curtain would project away from the window by a considerable amount. In most cases, this wouldn’t be an issue, but in this instance, the inward right angled window meant that the brackets of one particular blind would always be visible from the front of the house, and this was the opening end of the stacker door, so returns weren’t a viable option.”

“Because of this, I had to revisit the initial request for an S-fold heading on a decorative rod, instead suggesting a spacesaving inverted box pleat curtain on tracks fitted to pelmets in a coordinating fabric to hide the unsightly roller blinds completely.”

“The designer had already specified Warwick’s Elwood sheer in ‘Rice’, and I selected Zepel’s Science in ‘Fossil’ for the pelmets.”

The overall outcome of the project included enhanced visual appeal as well as functional benefits, says Harper.

“The room was a much more cohesive space once the curtains were installed. The sheers offered daytime privacy without completely blocking the light, which has functional benefits for a family room. The pattern also added an extra design element without overpowering the rest of the décor. Hidden cord drawn tracks allowed for easy opening and closing when required. The pelmets had the added bonus of providing extra thermal protection from hot/cold air travelling upwards through the tracking and into the room: something I’m sure the clients appreciated on the recent hot days! The clients were thrilled to no longer see the clunky roller blind brackets, and told us our solutions were a great investment.”

Harper notes that clients are increasingly specifying curtains, in particular sheers. “I’ve noticed quite a dramatic increase in the volume of clients requesting sheer curtains for their living spaces and bedrooms to add privacy, reduce glare and add softness to their home’s décor.” “In most cases, the sheer curtains are paired with another window treatment such as roller blinds, blockout curtains or plantation shutters to increase the thermal benefits within their home, reduce energy consumption and turn the windows into a more decorative feature. Clients are becoming more savvy about reducing their carbon footprint, and as a retailer I need to keep updated on the best solutions for the home. Of course, sheers alone are not the answer, but they team up fabulously with almost every other type of window treatment and are very easy to sell, being available at every price point.”

“The technology for producing quality fabrics has revolutionised the offerings in sheers. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with a gorgeous fabric composed from mostly stainless steel thread, just one example of this new direction.”
